“My intention with this piece was to highlight the issue of global warming while using kitchen utilities/ food as a visual metaphor for the issues being described in the narration. This current issue in particular is one that people still don’t believe exists, which is a terrifying thought as the Earth is reaching a breaking point. The uncomfortable nature of the piece is to show how that issue weighs into life and disrupts the everyday routine of breakfast and the uncertainty of the future. The piece was done in black and white to emphasize what’s in the frame as well as add a somber tone. The rounded edges create a frame around the clips, creating the feeling of being trapped with the reality of the news report. It also simulates a television screen that a person may use to watch the news. The audio was taken from a recent 2020 report of climate change from BBC, a public broadcasting service based in the U.K. As the reporters describe the issues we are currently facing, the clips focus on a specific aspect of the breakfast being prepared that emphasizes that fear. On top of that, the ambient noise was a distorted version of the audio from the actual clip. The ending of the piece includes the audio of a reporter saying that we “don’t know what to expect into the future” with a shot of a bagel in the toaster. The viewer is left with the uneasiness of waiting for the toaster to pop up and is never given the release of seeing it on screen.” - Zola
